The Old Church of St Nicholas on Uphill.
The Norman church of St Nicholas, probably on even older foundations, dominates village and bay from the top of the hill, providing a navigational mark for centuries of sailors battling through the confused tidal currents of the Bay into the Axe. Below the church, Uphill Wharf provided moorings and protection for village fishermen bringing in their catches of cod, whiting, shrimps, sprats and congers, not to mention the occasional cargo of contraband to be hidden in Uphill's sand dunes until the coastguard had passed by.
